It’s about time

Spending time with elderly family members or loved ones is very precious and will create memories that last a life time. My Mpumalanga scouted the Lowveld to find some of the best spots where you can spend quality time with your grandparents, parents or aunts and uncles.

Spend time in nature

Barberton is a scenic town situated next to the Makhonjwe Mountains and is rich in history from the gold mining era. Barberton is home to South Africa’s first JSE. Today the town boasts with buildings dating back to this era as well as the Geotrail where plenty of geological discoveries have been made. When in Barberton, head straight to the Fountain Baths Guest House. This used to be a bathing house in 1884 that was used by miners. It is also home to the oldest swimming pool in the old Transvaal. The guest house has been beautifully renovated and features quaint cottages and comfortable rooms overlooking the spectacular garden. Bird watching is one of the main attractions and animals such as baboons, giant bush babies and velvet monkeys are often spotted in the lush garden. Should you be in the mood for a light walk, the Rose Creek trail is right next to the estate and is suitable for all age groups. The picturesque town of Barberton offer many more activities from gold panning to mine tours and a heritage walk.

Walk with elephants

When visiting Mpumalanga, there are two well-known establishments where one can interact with elephants. Elephant Whispers in Hazyview and Kwa Madala in Hectorspruit. Seeing these majestic animals right in front of you and being able to touch their thick skins, is a once in a life time experience. The elephants who are domesticated, enjoy friendly interactions with visitors. You can feed them their favorite pellets, walk with them, pet them or even go for a ride. The professional guides or trainers will teach you a great deal about the gentle giants. For example how good their memory really is. Kwa Madala offers beautiful rock bungalows for guests to stay in whilst Hazyview has an abundance of guest houses and hotels that ensure a luxurious stay.

Go all out

Being old means in no way that one is cold. For those who enjoy adventure activities, Mpumalanga and the Lowveld offers many outdoor trips. Enjoy white water rafting, hiking, bass fishing, white water tubing, white water tubing or zip-lining to name a few. Induna Adventures is a very popular and professional company, should you wish to participate in these and other fun activities.
